Are Leaders ‘born’ Or Do They ‘learn’ To Become?}

Do Leaders have something special that they are born with? A unique quality or gift? Do they Learn to become leaders through various forms of education?

I often wonder if it takes a special sort of person to become a great leader. Not everybody can become one, I am sure of that, but just about anyone can learn about leadership skills and techniques. Education on the subject can be found easily on the internet and there are endless sources of information that we can all use to learn the skills that are needed to understand the techniques of leadership. But that’s not enough to really cut it. There is more, a characteristic that leaders have that education cannot create. Perhaps its in the genes, inherited from the distant past.

There are many many people out there with the education that can put to shame most common day politicians and countless successful business leaders. Yet so many of those people tend to stay in second place, or behind the scenes, not wanting to take the front seat, not wanting to be exposed to the realities of being in charge. In many ways, one has to be very brave to be a leader, to have all the responsibility and all of risk focused on you.

Throughout history, great leaders are first to take risks and the last to give up. That is not a trait that can be gained simply through education, it is I think something more fundamental, something inherited which burns deeply in the veins of some people, enabling them to take the reins when the opportunity to lead presents itself.

Perhaps you are a leader, or maybe you have what it takes and only need to learn how to unleash your potential. Perhaps some education will help.

US FEMA aid site only supports Windows with Internet Explorer

US FEMA aid site only supports Windows with Internet Explorer

Thursday, September 8, 2005

The US Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) website (for requesting disaster aid) is only functional for applicants using the latest version of the Internet Explorer web browser on the Microsoft Windows operating system. Users with other web browsers, such as Netscape, Opera, Safari, Firefox, or operating systems other than Windows, are effectively screened out of the site, which gives them a message that they need to download Internet Explorer version 6 or call FEMA at 1-800-621-3362 to register.

Relief workers are setting up many computer kiosks for evacuees to use. These kiosks are built from donated computers, many of which are unable to run Windows and/or Internet Explorer. Most of these kiosks use LiveCD versions of Linux, leaving evacuees unable to fill out aid forms.

A spokesperson for FEMA told MSNBC they were aware of the problem, and were trying to resolve the issue. They were, however, unable to provide an estimate of when the problem would be solved. Mike Quealy, a FEMA spokesperson, said the issue occurred because this tool was originally designed for in-house use by people working at the call center.

Telling the Opera web browser to spoof its user agent, by identifying itself as Internet Explorer, appears to trick the FEMA website into allowing the user to fill out the form. Firefox users can install the Prefbar extension (http://prefbar.mozdev.org/), and use the “User Agent Spoof” dropdown to achieve the same effect. Safari users can use the Debug drop-down menu (http://developer.apple.com/internet/safari/faq.html#anchor14), and use the “User Agent” option to achieve the same effect. Other options are to run Windows and Internet Explorer in an emulator such as VirtualPC on the Mac or VMware on Linux. This option is slow and requires the user to already own or purchase a license for Windows and the emulator software. Purchasing the software can cost several hundred dollars. Implementing a software compatibility layer, like the GPL wine project, allows the user to run certain Windows software on Linux, but still requires valid licenses for Windows.

Today, association football club Manchester United F.C. announced they appointed Portuguese José Mourinho as their new manager for the next three seasons with an option to stay at the club until 2020. Mourinho’s predecessor Louis van Gaal was fired on Monday after two-years of service at Old Trafford.

Jose is quite simply the best manager in the game today. He has won trophies and inspired players in countries across Europe

Manchester United finished in fifth position in the Premier League this season under Dutchman Louis van Gaal and missed out on UEFA Champions League qualification, but won the FA Cup 2–1 against Crystal Palace.

Mourinho previously served London-based club Chelsea in two spells and won the Premier League with them three times, lastly in the 2014–15 season. He also worked with Spain’s capital club Real Madrid winning one La Liga title with Los Blancos, Champions League and domestic league titles with Portuguese club FC Porto and Italian club Internazionale.

Mourinho has a 66% win record and 2.19 points-per-match ratio in the Premier League, the best in the league. In his first season (2004-05) at Chelsea, The Blues won the title with a record high 95 points.

Ed Woodward, Manchester United’s executive vice-chairman, praised Mourinho saying “Jose is quite simply the best manager in the game today. He has won trophies and inspired players in countries across Europe and, of course, he knows the Premier League very well, having won three titles here”. Mourinho said, “It is a club known and admired throughout the world. There is a mystique and a romance about it which no other club can match”.

Mourinho has won trophies in four different countries. His team is to face German side Borussia Dortmund and local rivals Manchester City in club friendlies during July.

On Thursday, Spanish football club FC Barcelona announced their first-choice goalkeeper, Claudio Bravo, was sold to English club Manchester City F.C. for €18 million on a four-year deal. Manchester City is obliged to pay €2 million as add-ons.

33-year-old Claudio Bravo joined the Catalonians in the 2014 summer transfer window from Real Sociedad to replace Víctor Valdés. Bravo conceded only 43 goals in 75 matches overall, 72 La Liga matches, for the club.

In 2014, Bravo did not concede a single goal in nine consecutive league matches and set a new La Liga record for consecutive minutes without a concession. That season, he conceded only eighteen goals and won the Zamora Trophy awarded to the goalkeeper with the lowest goal-conceded-per-match ratio. He was named in the La Liga Team of the Season.

In two seasons at Camp Nou, Bravo won eight trophies — two La Liga titles, two Copa del Reys, and one each of UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and Super Copa de España. Last year, Bravo led Chile to their maiden Copa América title and successfully defended the title this year in the Centenario edition of the tournament. He was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament in both tournaments.

After signing Manchester City, Bravo said, “It is not easy to leave a club like Barcelona where I had two fantastic years, but the opportunity to work with Pep Guardiola was too good to refuse.”

Earlier on Thursday, Barcelona announced signing Dutch goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen from AFC Ajax for €13 million.

Bravo faces Barcelona in the Champions League group stage, as the draw on Thursday placed Barcelona and Manchester City both in Group C.

On Thursday, German football club Borussia Dortmund (BVB) confirmed the signing of 18-year-old Frenchman Ousmane Dembélé from French football club Stade Rennais. Dortmund have signed Dembélé on a five-year deal for an undisclosed fee until June 30, 2021.

Dembélé joined the French side in 2010, aged thirteen, and made his professional debut in Ligue 1 last November. He made 25 appearences; scored twelve goals and created five assists. His performances earned him a call-up to the France national U-17 team.

BVB CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said “He has always given us the impression that he does not wish for anything else other than to play our intensive football for our special club in our unique stadium.” ((de)) German language: Ousmane hat immer den Eindruck vermittelt, dass er sich nichts mehr wünscht, als für unseren besonderen Klub unseren intensiven Fußball in unserem einzigartigen Stadion spielen zu wollen.

Dortmund’s Sporting Director Michael Zorc praised Dembélé’s skills saying “Ousmane can play nearly every position in attack. He is strong one-on-one, he can play with both feet, he is good at nutmegging and dribbling, and he is fast and dangerous in front of goal.” ((de)) German language: Ousmane kann in der Offensive fast jede Position spielen. Er ist stark im Eins-gegen-Eins, beidfüßig, trickreich, schnell und torgefährlich.

The Frenchman would feature in the UEFA Champions League next season. He said “I can hardly wait to play in the Bundesliga in front of more than 80,000 spectators in the Signal Iduna Park and to walk onto the pitch in the Champions League with my new team mates.” ((de)) German language: Ich kann es kaum erwarten, in der Bundesliga vor mehr als 80.000 Zuschauern im Signal Iduna Park zu spielen und mit meinen neuen Teamkollegen in der Champions League aufzulaufen.

This season, Dembélé won the UNFP trophy for Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year.

Manchester United bests Ajax to win Europa league

Manchester United bests Ajax to win Europa league

Friday, May 26, 2017

On Wednesday, in the UEFA Europa League final, Manchester United defeated Dutch capital-club Ajax AFC 0–2 to win the Europa League title and qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage despite finishing sixth in the Premier League this season. A deflected goal from Paul Pogba’s left-footed shot in the first half and a flick goal by Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the second half ensured that José Mourinho’s side lifts its third trophy in this season, previously winning Community Shield and the EFL Cup.

Before the kick-off, a one-minute silence was observed at the Friends Arena, Stockholm, for the victims of a suicide attack in Manchester Arena on Monday. The English side had just 33% ball possession in the entire match, completing 192 passes out of 276. A comparatively young Ajax team, with the average age of the starting lineup no more than 23 years, had 88% passing accuracy, with 565 successful passes. Manchester United had better numbers for defense, recovering 64 balls – 22 more than Ajax, and had almost twice as many ball clearances as the Dutch counterpart. A total of 32 fouls were committed in the match, and the official booked six players – three players of each side received a yellow card.

At the age of 17 years and 285 days, Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt became the youngest player to play in the Europa League final, while Marcus Rashford became the youngest winner of the tournament at the age of 19 years and 205 days.

A deflection off Davinson Sánchez from Paul Pogba’s left-footed shot gave United an early lead. Ajax’s shot-stopper saved Antonio Valencia’s close-range strike. Another attempt in the first half by Ajax’s Bertrand Traoré was saved by Sergio Romero. The half time ended 0–1. Minutes into the second half, Armenian midfielder Mkhitaryan scored a goal just in front of Ajax’s net, which doubled Manchester’s lead. Five players were booked in the second half. Ajax’s attempts in the final minutes of the game were stopped by Romero, not giving them a chance to reduce the difference.

Last season, Premier League club Liverpool FC lost the Europa finals against Spanish side Sevilla FC. United is the first English club to win the Europa since 2013. This season’s Premier League winners Chelsea won the tournament four years ago against Benfica at Ajax’s ground, Amsterdam ArenA. Since then, Sevilla has added three Europa titles to their collection.

After the match, Ajax’s coach Peter Bosz said, “We’re obviously disappointed. I didn’t see the Ajax team I’m used to, pressing and competing for first balls. We weren’t good enough. Often, to win finals you must first lose them. It’s all new for all my team. They will learn a lot from it and if we keep the squad together they will be stronger for it.” Bosz’s first season as Ajax’s coach ended trophy-less.

Manchester United’s boss José Mourinho said, “We are in the Champions League in the right way and for me the right way is winning the Premier League or winning the Europa League. We were not strong enough to win the Premier League but we were strong enough to win the Europa League and we are back in the Champions League. The club now has every trophy in world football. We fought hard for this since the beginning. We totally deserved the win. I am so happy to see all the players, including the boys with the crutches, with the trophy.” The Portuguese has won two Champions League titles – one each with FC Porto and Inter, and two Europa titles – the first one with Porto.

United became the fifth team after Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Juventus, and Ajax to win all three major UEFA trophies – European Cup Winners’ Cup, the European Cup (rebranded as Champions League) and UEFA Cup (rebranded as Europa League). They are to face the winner of Real Madrid and Juventus in the Champions League final in the UEFA Super Cup scheduled on August 8 at the Philip II Arena in Skopje.

“We are in the Champions League in the right way and for me the right way is winning the Premier League or winning the Europa League.”
